About Me

Umit Ogras is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and entrepreneur. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Career

Umit Ogras started his professional journey after obtaining his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007. Before becoming an academic, he utilized his expertise at Intel, where he worked as a research scientist from 2008 to 2013. During this time, he worked on Intel Xeon Server processors (in particular, the Skylake server) and energy-efficient systems-on-chip (SoC). Later, he enhanced his teaching skills at Arizona State University as a faculty member from 2013 to 2020. Subsequently, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also started a company, called xPLORE Solutions, and became one of the founding members of DASH Tech Integrated Circuits, Inc.

Umit Ogras pursued multiple research directions throughout his career – from heterogeneous multicore architectures, wearable computing, low-power VLSI, and flexible hybrid electronics to domain-specific systems. Google Scholar designated one of his first papers co-authored with his Ph.D. advisor Radu Marculescu as a classic in computer hardware design. His passion for embedded systems, edge AI, mobile and wearable computing, multicore architectures, flexible hybrid electronics, and semiconductor engineering has made him an authority in these fields. He leads the eLab Research group and continues to train graduate, undergraduate, and high school students.

Dr. Ogras is a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. These include DARPA Director’s Fellowship and Young Faculty Awards, NSF CAREER Award, Intel’s 2021 Outstanding Researcher Award, and multiple best paper awards from esteemed journals and conferences.
